GBR was established in 1976 for the surfers of Geraldton and surrounding regions.

In March 2001 GBR's President Ian Salmond, with Club Founder and Contest Director Leon Norris, traveled to Newcastle to attend the Tracks Surfing Hall of Fame Awards. Salmond and Norris accepted the prestigious Simon Anderson Award for GBR as the Number One Board Riders Club in Australia - 2000.

The club has a long history and has produced many State and National champions and more recently has seen surfers who have honed their skills with GBR progress onto the professional circuit.

GBR is affiliated with Surfing Western Australia and Geraldton Surf Life Saving Club.

GBR have formed a partnership with the Back Beach Improvement Group and are currently involved in many projects including a feasibility study for an ARTIFICIAL SURFING REEF at Mahomet's Beach. Click here to go the BBIG Website and find out the latest!

GBR runs a pro-am event each year:The  Sunshine Surmasters. (August 26th & 27th). This year is the events 30th year and GBR a planning a gala event with the 30th Anniversary Celebrations for the club and the contest being held the weekend before (August 19th).

GBR also host two State surfing rounds annually: The Junior State Titles and the Open/Masters State Titles.
