Hagan Dominates Third Surfing Event
The Geraldton Board Riders third event on Sunday was the stage for some exceptional surfing in great conditions. Justin Hagan was a stand out, winning both the Mens Open and Masters divisions.
The decision to postpone the third event for two consecutive weekends turned out to be a good one, with a perfect day and 3ft waves being the reward on Sunday at Flat Rocks. The ability to move the event to a day when the best conditions are on offer is a key factor in the success of the new competition format.
Another strong turn out help to make the day very entertaining and enjoyable for all who attended. A total of 55 entrants competed for prizes and had a great day and some great waves in the process.
The final of the Open Division was characterized by some of the best surfing you could hope to see locally, with all surfers getting high scoring rides. However, it was Justin Hagan, with his brand of power and precision surfing, who prevailed. Hagan caught a number of quality waves in the final and was able to perform a sequence of radical maneuvers from start to end, which gave him more high scoring rides and higher scoring rides than other finalists.
It was the same in the Masters final, with Hagan getting better waves and surfing far more radically and cleanly than other finalists.
Leah Wright backed up her win in the last GBR event with a win in the Womens final. Leah scored a perfect 10 on one of her waves and it was not surprising that she was named Surfer of the Event.
There are some bright young prospects for the GBR in the Cadets division this year and in the third event it was Jake Fawcett who surfed best to take out first place.
Jake's dad, Bob Fawcett also picked off some nice waves and surfed very well in the Grand Masters final to secure victory in that division and make it a successful day for the family.
Alex Knowles won the Junior division and also surfed very well in the Mens Open division final.
Jamie Saunders, who travelled from down south to take part in the event, took out the Elimination Final.
The GBR would like to thank Rip Curl for sponsoring the event and everyone who attended. The second State round is in Geraldton this weekend. The GBR final for 2005 will be held between then and the Sunshine Surf Masters, which will be held in late August. Further details will be confirmed shortly.

Wave Wrights
A great day of surfing action was dominated by the Wright family on Sunday at the second Geraldton Board Riders competition for 2005.
The event was held at Headbutts in nice 3ft offshore conditions. A total of 55 entrants competed for prizes and had a great day and some great waves in the process.
Because the wave quality was good the standard of surfing was maintained at a very high level throughout the day.
In the Open Division, the final was close with all surfers getting some high scoring waves. Drew Wright, who in the semi-final scored a perfect 10 for one of the most radical aerial maneuvers ever witnessed at a GBR competition, did just enough to hold out Jake Malloy, who won the Junior Division in the recently held State round at Margaret River.
The Womens final was also closely contested, with Leah Wright (Drew’s sister) getting the wave of the heat to just outscore Kirra Young.
In the Cadets, Danny Williams, who also won at the State round, surfed well to just beat Jake Fawcett.
In the Juniors, while Alex Knowles surfed very well, Ryan Wright (Drew’s brother) was able to clinch victory with a very high scoring ride, which ended up being the difference.
It was the same in the Masters, with Justin Hagan’s second wave proving too strong for other competitors to match.
In the Grand Masters, the consistent good surfing of Dave Williams saw him overcome a strong challenge from Bob Fawcett.
Ben Gibson took out the Elimination Final with the tube ride of the day.
Not surprisingly, Drew Wright was named surfer of the event.
The GBR would like to thank Creatures of Leisure and Rusty for sponsoring the event and everyone who attended. The next competition will be held in June and the GBR is hoping for another good turn out. Further details will be confirmed shortly.

Geraldton board Riders club first event for 2005 got off to a great start on Sunday. Competitors met at Flat Rocks where it was decided to move further south to the beach breaks at Headbutts.
The conditions were cool early with a moderate ESE breeze. Waves were good quality waist to chest high rights and lefts.
The attraction of prizes from Polar Optics and Ozborn Sunnies for all finalists resulted in a good turn out for all divisions including women’s.
GBR have initiated a new contest format for 2005 where 3 sponsored events are held with the best two results counted to qualify for the grand final. Surfers unlucky enough to be eliminated in their first heat are relegated to a separate round aptly named the ‘dunny bowl’ where they fight it out in sudden death elimination and an extra prize pool.
The open division hit the water first at 8am and it was clear that the lighter framed surfers would have an advantage in the small conditions. With Jake Molloy, Justin Hagan and Drew Wright all posting high scores in the 7.5 range in their respective heats.
The open semi-finals saw the upset of the round when 2004 club champion Justin Hagan pipped out of second place by the in form Kit Tapper. Who progressed to final to battle it out with Kayshon Rodd, Jake Molloy and Drew Wright.
Justin Hagan made amends in the Masters Final when he caught a total of 13 waves in 25 minutes posting scores of 7.5 on two of the longest waves ridden all day.
The Women’s Final was also dominated by one surfer when Kirra Young established an early lead with scores of 6.5 and 7. Kirra clearly caught the better waves and performed solid turns at every opportunity.
In the Grand Masters Final Kim Burton took an early lead producing good turns on some of the longer lefts on offer. 2004 club champion Leon Norris was struggling to find waves that were holding up on the right hander and was left with a highest score of 3.5 at the 5 minute mark. With only minutes to go Norris launched into a long right hander and produced as succession of solid turns to be awarded a 7.5 and take the final from Burton.
The Juniors Final saw a great exhibition of radical contest surfing from Jake Molloy scoring as high as 8 on the fast left handers. Also surfing well was Alex Knowles who produced a 7.5 on his first wave but was unable to consolidate with another high scorer.
The Open Grand Final commenced with the best scoring wave of the day when Drew Wright, fresh from a sojourn to the East Coast competing in the Pro Junior events, blazed away with top to bottom vertical snaps on a sucky right hander to be awarded 9 points from the judges. Wright polished off his performance at the end of the final with two more strong waves.
The Dunny Bowl final ran with a ‘do or die’ format being 15 minutes, 2 wave maximum, best wave. Sean Salmond took his time to ensure he picked the best possible wave and did it in style on a good 7.5 right hander to take the final from Kirra Young who wasn’t far behind with a 6.5 as her highest wave.
Surfer of the event was awarded to Justin Hagan for his dominant performance in the Masters event.
