CLUB HISTORY

 

1976

Champion Bay Boardriders  Club formed by Leon Norris to assist with the development of surfing in the Midwest region of Western Australia. It was originally named Champion Bay Boardriders as Geraldton is situated on Champion Bay.

1977

Rip Curl/ Corner Surf Shop Sunshine Festival Surfing Contest  The club organised the Contest – held in conjunction with Geraldton’s annual Sunshine Festival. The contest has run for 24 years with 2001 being the 25th contest (now known as the Sunshine Surfmasters).

1978

Pro-am event in Western Australia  The Sunshine Festival event was the first pro-am event in Western Australia (1978) and has attracted many Australian surfing legends over the years such as Derek Hynd, Terry Fitzgerald, Nicky Wood, Glen Kelly, Dougall Walker, Dave Macaulley, Mitch Thorson, Paul and Jake Patterson, Matt Branson to name a few.

Australian Titles GBR initiated and hosted the running of two Australian Titles in the Geraldton area.

1985

Top Australian Judge - Ian Salmond at the Aussie Titles.

1988

 State Tiles GBR has hosted the second round of Surfing W.A.s State Titles in Geraldton each year since 1988.

Rip Curl Stomp GBR nominated for the Rip Curl Stomp which was an event run by Derek Hynd with film recording by Peter Crawford. Two Geraldton surfers – Kerby Brown and Kit Raynor won the Geraldton leg and competed all around Australia with Kit taking the eventual title in Queensland.

Geraldton Surf Life Saving Association  GBR has assisted Geraldton Surf Life Saving Association to conduct professional short board events in the W.A.SLSA State Titles held twice in Geraldton.

1996

Australian over 40s Champion- Ian Salmond

1997

Development Club Introduced the Junior Development Club (JDC) with the aim to develop Junior and Women’s surfing at the earliest possible stage. The first of any other club in Australia. Youngest member six years old.

1999

Longboard Club Formed Developed by local enthusiasts and in the first year held the innaugrual Geraldton Longboard Classic (now an annual event).

Ministry of Sport GBR was approached by the Ministry of Sport to run a tag team surfing event between shires in the Midwest Region at the last Midwest games. The event was a huge success.

Shire’s Coastal Management Plan The Greenough Shire Council requested GBR to submit a proposal for the future management and development of the Flat Rocks area. The proposal was professionally prepared by GBR and presented to councillors for discussion. The proposal has been unanimously accepted into the Shire’s Coastal Management Plan.

2000

SMP Slave Junior Challenge The first Junior Surf Challenge was up and running in January of this year. Very successful with evening entertainment jointly put together with the GSLC.

Aussie Titles Nearly half of the team representing W.A. at the 2000 Aussie Titles in Tasmania were GBR members.

2001

Simon Anderson Club Award The Geraldton Boardriders from WA took out the Premier Club Award, and after two days travelling the Gerro boys were not going to give up their moment of glory without a fight. With an acceptance speech written on a roll of dunny paper, the lads’ 15 minutes of fame quickly became 30, before the microphone was eventually prised from their grasp. Good on ‘em though, it’s a long way to come for a trophy.

State Training Camps GBR is conducting regional Junior Training Camps on behalf of Surfing W.A. prior to each State round throughout 2001 two of our accredited coaches – Tom Attenborough (Batavia Coast Surfing Academy) and Dave Williams (contest director of JDC).

Club Room  A GBR notice board is located in the Surf Club’s public car park at Mahomet’s beach to inform members and the public of up and coming events.

2002

Artificial Surfing Reef Proposal GBR submitted a proposal to the Midwest Development Commission for the funding of a feasibility study into the construction of an artificial surfing reef at Mahomet’s Beach. GBR was awarded $20,000 from the Development Commission and a further $3,000 from the Western Australian Department of Training.

Body Board Club Formed Local body boarders support the introduction of the Geraldton Boady Boarders Club as part of GBR.

Leon Norris selected as Contest Director for the National Open/Masters Surfing Titles Surfing W.A. recruited GBR contest Director to assist with the administration of the Aussie Titles hosted by Surfing W.A. at Rottnest Island. W.A. surfers made the history books by taking out al but one of the nine Aussie Titles on offer.

2003

Artificial Surfing Reef Proposal

GBR successfully raise remaining funds for the feasibility study from local business and supporters.

Study due to commence in July 2003 completing in November 2003.

ASR New Zealand contracted to carry out feasibility study.

Back Beach Improvement Group (BBIG) appointed to oversee the feasibility study process.
