Original Topic: Posted - i am writing this to express my disappointment and concern for the guardian’s support of the local geraldton music scene. saturday, june 20th saw one of the biggest state-wide original music competitions hit breaker’s bar , the next big thing. i was privledged, along with hundreds of others, to attend this show and witness the awesome talent that is local geraldton music. however, there was no media representation, no photos taken, no story. i for one remember when this gig was so widely publicised that there were next to 3 pages on the bands/artists, reviews, pictures of the audience in the paper. what has happened to the photo and write up congratulating the winners who are making their way in an extremely rough industry, and all the way representing our town?
i did see the general wrap up from george scicluna and praise is given there but its sad to see that right next door to this in the midwest times was a ½ page colour photo and write up on a visiting perth comic! not to mention a few weeks ago when the presets and chemistry hit town, both these gigs got 2- 3 full colour pages dedicated to them…our home grown boys don’t even get a photo???? what about the family and friends of the band ‘all in all’ who have watched their boys bust their guts to get recognised and finally win this competition? do they not get the satisfaction of seeing their boy’s ugly mugs in the paper?
i rang the guardian on this matter and was extremely offended by the reply i received by one of the writers. after telling me nothing would be done about the covering of the nbt, he went on to ask me who i was and then replied “this conversation is going nowhere, this conversation is over” as if i am nothing and of no importance. am i not a member of this community? do i not pay rates and taxes? i am a local highschool teacher who has done numerous things for this community and i am certainly not a perth based artist who is going to come to our town and leave with thousands of geraldton’s dollars in my pocket. i think it is a very sad day for geraldton when our home-grown, original talent is overshadowed by big names and even bigger wallets.
