MINGENEW WILDFLOWER REPORT
18th August 2004

All roads leading into Mingenew are displaying a beautiful assortment of flowers. Ranging from bush flowers to the general wildflowers.

MINGENEW TOWNSITE
There is an assortment of flowers on the common walk. Pink Everlastings, Spider Orchids, Blue Enamel Orchids and a variety of flowering native bushes.

MINGENEW HILL
There are still some orchids appearing. On the top of the hill there is an abundance of yellow pom poms. There are still plenty of Thrytopmenes to add a splash of colour. It is definitely worth the climb to the top to view Mingenew Town Site, and enjoy these flowers. If you don’t wish to climb, there is plenty of flowers around the hill. Walk through the gate which is located at the parking area up on the hill.

DEPOT HILL
Pink Everlastings are appearing throughout the area. There are also some orchids still appearing (Spider, Cowslip, Donkey, Enamel). If you are interested in taking a longer drive, there are plenty of flowers further along the road. Grevilleas, Trigger plants, Acacias, Dryandras, Hibertias just to name a few. You may still see a few Bird Beak Hakeas, but they are on the tail end of their season. There are orchids on the intersection of Depot Hill Road North and Yarragadee West Road. Please take care when driving through this area as there have been a few echidnas sited, and unfortunately a couple run over.

COALSEAM
The wildflowers in this area are looking fantastic. There are plenty of yellow pom poms, white pom poms, pink everlastings and white everlastings. There has been a wreath flower sited (contact the Rangers for location), along with 6 different varieties of orchids. It is worthwhile taking time to walk through the bush to enjoy all of the flowers (Please remember to try and stay on the trails). There is a great BBQ area, so take your lunch, and spend the day enjoying the flowers.

For more information, please contact the MINGENEW TOURIST AND PROMOTIONS on 99281460. Open Monday to Friday (9am to 3pm) & Saturday (9am to 12pm) from July through to October.

Many other areas in the Mid West are blooming at the moment. We have had great reports from different areas. Canna (40km North of Morawa), has plenty of flowers to see. They have wreath plants half formed, they should be out fully in about a week. They also have many orchids, everlastings, pom poms, and a range of bush flowers. More information can be obtained from Canna Landmark, open from 8am to 12pm Monday to Friday. Maps are left available outside these times. The Perenjori area is also experiencing a good show of flowers. Wreath flowers are also beginning to flower in the area. They also have plenty of everlastings and orchids. The road between Perenjori and Morawa has a great coverage. For more information, contact the Perenjori Tourist Centre 99731105.

Please come and enjoy the natural beauty of our areas. A couple of things to note when looking at flowers;
1. Wildflowers are best found and appreciated by parking your car well off the road and walking along the road verge or around rock outcrops.
2. Everlastings turn to face the sun, so it is best to view them with your back to the sun.
3. There are also many types of birds and native wildlife to enjoy as well. It only takes a few minutes to stop, look, listen and enjoy!
